Nia Academy – Tutor

Salary: Up to £50 per hour
Contract type: Self employed
Sector: Secondary/ Primary Education (Years 4-9)
Subject Area: English
Job Roles: Tutor

Nia Academy is an exciting new initiative aimed at black students being managed and delivered by Leaps and Bounds Educational Services and established with Haringey Education Partnership (HEP).

Nia means purpose In Swahili. On the 5th day of Kwanzaa a candle is lit representing the principle of Nia, or purpose. It encourages individuals to look within not only to set personal goals, but also to choose goals that benefit the community.

Similarly, Nia Academy aims to promote academic excellence within a strong cultural context, through which a sense of purpose, identity and belonging will be emphasised.

At Nia Academy, students will develop key reading and writing skills identified in the national curriculum. Students will be exposed to a range of black fiction and non fiction authors with a particular focus on the black experience.

Our Black Cultural Studies programme will provide students with an opportunity to learn about black history from a broader perspective than what is often offered in mainstream education. This is a key aspect of the Nia Academy curriculum and as such we expect our tutors to be passionate about teaching Black history, irrespective of their current personal knowledge.

We are seeking enthusiastic self employed tutors who share the same vision and preferably background as our students, to join our Academy.
